What is an Attention Mentor?

Often times when people ask me what I do and I say, “I help people create a life they love,” they say, “Oh, you’re a Life Coach.”

I understand the mind’s tendency to associate new information with known information and so this is the logical association. The difference, however, is that there is actually specific training to become a Life Coach and they have a certain way of leading their clients to the results they seek that differ from what I offer as an Attention Mentor.

When I was deciding what to call the specific way I help people create a life they love, the definition for a mentor* seemed a better match to what I do, than a life coach*. Since my emphasis is on managing attention, I decided on Attention Mentor.

* mentor: a wise and trusted guide
* life coach: an advisor who helps people with problems, decisions, and goal attainment in daily life.

I’ve been studying and teaching how to create a life you love for over two decades and now base everything I teach on one simple formula:

Decide what you want and give that your attention.

Deciding is our ultimate power in this human experience. I devote the first chapter of my book, InJoy! The Decision is Yours, to the power of deciding, and I offer my Decide Process in my JATAT Guidebook in hopes of empowering people to decide more deliberately.

The importance of getting clarity about what you want to experience cannot be overstated. If you don’t know what you truly want, and most don’t, you have no focus. Without a focal point, managing your attention deliberately becomes a much greater challenge. Read my article, The Power of Clarity, for more on this subject.

Giving your attention to what you want, instead of what you don’t want and all the reasons you think you can’t have what you want, is the only way you will ever have what you want.

Your attention is your creative energy, whatever you give it to becomes more prominent in your life. Quantum physics is even demonstrating that the act of observing (i.e. directing attention toward) literally changes that which is observed…changing wave functions to particles and back to wave functions when attention is removed.

When attention is not managed deliberately, it becomes scattered and ineffective like the far reaches of a flashlight beam in the dark. But when attention is focused and directed deliberately (easier than you think), it becomes ultra-effective like a laser beam. Both the flashlight and the laser direct light, but one is much more focused than the other.

As an Attention Mentor, I can help you recover spent attention so you can reinvest it in what you want. I can teach you simple methods for letting go of all that holds your attention captive so you can empower that which you choose to experience instead of that which you resist.

Symptoms of poorly managed attention include (but are not limited to): ineffectiveness, boredom, frustration, exhaustion, procrastination, lack of motivation, lethargy, inertia, weight gain, accelerated aging, poor health, insomnia, fear, dread, anxiety, anger, resentment, divorce, loss of libido, etc.

Effects of deliberately managed attention include (but are not limited to): contentment, satisfaction, passion, happiness, clarity, joy, peace, compassion, right livelihood, positive outlook, self-esteem, accomplishments, success, fulfillment, etc.

The choice is yours…decide what you want and give that your attention. I can help.

Who is Shelia Norling?

Shelia Norling

Shelia Norling is an explorer of life and an Attention Mentor.

She has been exploring the mechanics of reality and teaching deliberate evolution for over two decades. Her educational background is in systems design engineering and self development.

Her desire to understand how reality works has led Shelia to author multiple books on the subject. Her books and articles are available at www.ChangeYourMynd.com.

As an Attention Mentor, Shelia helps people create a life they love through the simple formula:

Decide what you want and give that your attention.

Ask yourself this simple question: Which do you give more attention to, what you want or what you don’t want and all the reasons you think you can’t have what you want?

Attention is your creative energy, a commodity used to pay for the reality you experience (i.e. what you give your attention to becomes…manifests…attracts your reality). If you don’t like your current reality, stop paying for it with your attention.

Here’s how Shelia can help:

She can help you get very clear about what you want and show you how to give that more of your attention.

She can help you recover spent attention so you can reinvest it in what you want.

She can show you how to move from exhaustion, frustration, procrastination, lethargy, lack of motivation, and worse to recover enough attention easily and quickly so that you can begin to manage your creative energy deliberately and create a life you love.

She can help you let go of fear, anxiety, stress, sorrow, grief, and any other anchor you wish to release, easily and permanently in the moment.

She can help you achieve a quiet mind. This is our natural state and is experienced on a consistent basis in our daily lives when we manage our attention deliberately and allow the mind to quiet down of its own accord.

Athletes and musicians, to name a few, often refer to this as the “zone.” It’s a point where one experiences a comforting peace and inner silence even in the midst of a chaotic and loud stadium.

In the past, the quiet mind was only sought by those on an intense spiritual path. Today, it makes sense for anyone who wishes to enjoy contentment and peace while achieving extraordinary success in whatever endeavor they choose.

Magic in College

I’ve always had an interest in how reality works. From an early age, I read books like The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale, Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill, The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace B. Wattles, As A Man Thinketh by James Allen, and so many other great works. The one thing all these books have in common is the idea that our thoughts affect our reality.

As Gandhi said, “Man is the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.”

I experienced an amazing sequence of events during college that led to a life long search for how to create this effortlessness consistently. The Just A Thought About That™ (JATAT) process offered on this website is the result of this search.

For some, it can be difficult to imagine all good things coming to them without needing to chase after them. I share this story from my own life as an example of what’s possible…

I was in school, studying for a degree in computer information systems. I was two trimesters into an eight trimester degree program.

I lived in Dallas, went to school in Irving (a 40 minute drive), and had no form of transportation of my own. I had been riding with my roommate until she got a job closer to school.

I worked after school at a job near home that paid the bills, nothing more. When I no longer had reliable transportation, this job came to an abrupt stop.

I was sitting in the commons area at school studying for finals when one of my classmates asked me what I was going to do over the break. I said, “I don’t know but I need to get to North Little Rock, Arkansas and I don’t know how I’m going to get there.”

At that precise moment, a woman I didn’t know, walked by and overheard my need. She said she would be glad to give me a ride.

She picked me up at my apt and dropped me off 5 hours later at my parent’s house in NLR. We had a wonderful visit and enjoyed the ride. It cost me nothing. Although I had no debt, I also had no money. She was glad to have the company.

I knew I needed to get there but I had no logical reason for the knowing. My family had no money for me. No branch of my family had money. My parents had moved to Arkansas for my dad’s job not long before I moved to Dallas to go to school.

So there I was, in NLR, Arkansas with no money and no way to get back to my stuff and school, but my conviction in my knowing never waned. It never occurred to me to worry about any of that. My intuition was simply to get to my parent’s house and I had somehow magically managed to do that.

I remember feeling a calm that didn’t seem to suit the situation. I should be fretting about how I was going to get some money to buy a car and I only had one week before school started again.

The next morning the phone rang. It was a great aunt no one had heard from in over 15 years. She was calling to see if anyone needed any money. She said she had just inherited some money and felt led to contact us and see if anyone needed any.

She wired $1500 that day. One “problem” down. Now I just needed to find a reliable car for $1,000 so I could keep some of the money to live on until I could find a job.

That’s when the phone rang again (I kid you not!). A friend of my dad called to say he had a car for sale that he felt good about offering to a friend. He said it had a lot of good miles left in it and he only wanted $1,000 for it.

Well, I knew enough by then not to question it. We went and checked out the car and bought it. It served me well. Never needed one repair through the rest of school and always took me where I needed to go in comfort.

Okay, I was becoming a believer for sure. These few days were so magical I couldn’t imagine it could get any better.

But wait…there’s more!

I headed back to Dallas with time to look for a job before school started…or so I thought.

When I got back to my apartment, my roommate had moved all of my stuff into a corner of my bedroom and moved in a new roommate who was sleeping in my bed.

My roommate said she had no reason to believe I was coming back. She was right. There was no logical way I could find the money, buy a car and come back with money to live on until I could find a job, but I did.

She had invited the girl from upstairs in the apartment above us to move in with her. She said she was tired of not having any furniture and Laura had some furniture.

Problem was Laura already had a roommate and she left her roommate, Susan, in a bind when she moved in with my roommate. Now Susan was going to have to move back home because she couldn’t afford the place by herself.

Well, I had no place to stay and she needed a roommate so we agreed to a temporary solution. I moved in with Susan.

Susan & I

Susan and I at my graduation

Susan had a fully stocked apartment. She had everything! She loved to cook, as do I, and had a wonderfully stocked kitchen. She loved movies like I do, so she had a great T.V. set up with a bank of movies. She was even tall enough to share her clothes with me and told me to help myself to whatever I found.

I made out like a bandit! Susan and I became great friends and I shared an apartment with her for over a year before I moved closer to the school.

Now I had a car, a great fully stocked apartment and wonderful roommate, money to live on until I could get a job…how could it possibly get any better?

Moving and getting settled took most of my remaining time (I had a king size waterbed that was a bear to move) so I figured I would start looking for a job during the day after school.

The first day back to school, my favorite teacher asked me if I would be interested in providing tutoring for the computer science students. I was already tutoring my classmates so I thought I might as well get paid for it.

What a sweet deal! I got paid well to sit in the library at school and do my homework. I simply made myself available and posted my schedule. I had as many hours (within reason) as I wanted and it didn’t matter if I was tutoring or not, I got paid to be available.

This story has been an anchor in my experience of things happening magically without logical explanation. I have many other stories but this remains one of my favorites for how all encompassing it was.

Absolutely everything I needed was provided without me doing anything more than trusting and acting on the information that showed up.

I accepted the ride, I accepted the monetary gift, I bought the car, I accepted the new apartment, I accepted the job. Life flowed!

Amazing!

My Intention

My intention with this website is to awaken a deeper understanding of greater possibilities and empower morphogenetic fields that increase compassion, peace, and joy.

I offer these pages to provide useful information that, when applied, can lead to an experience of greater possibilities.

When Sir Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile record, he demonstrated for the first time that it was possible and this created a new pattern, a morphogenetic field, that others could also access. Soon many were running a mile in less than 4 minutes.

Our evolution is toward greater and greater possibilities and as we individually experience more of what’s possible beyond mediocrity, we create and expand patterns for all to enjoy.

As more people have a certain experience (i.e. peace and joy), the pattern for that experience is strengthened and empowered. This works the same for everything whether enjoyable or detrimental.

The work you do to create a better life for yourself serves all of humanity. When your attention is turned toward experiencing greater possibilities in your life, you demonstrate what’s possible and help others do the same.

It is my hope that the information you find on these pages leads to the creation and experience of greater possibilities in your life. The simplest changes can lead to profound improvements in one’s experience of life.

You can enjoy a happy life filled with peace and joy. The pattern has been created, your happiness empowers it.

I invite you to help me empower the morphogenetic field of greater possibilities through increased awareness. Please recommend this site to people you know.

Thank you for this opportunity to be of service.

Read my article Together We Can Have Peace for more information about morphogenetic fields.
