Susan & I at my graduation
As Gandhi said, “Man is the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.”
I experienced an amazing sequence of events during college that led to a life long search for how to create this effortlessness consistently. The Just A Thought About That™ (JATAT) process offered on this website is the result of this research.
For some, it can be difficult to imagine all good things coming to them without needing to chase after them. I share this story from my own life as an example of what’s possible…
I was in school, studying for a degree in computer information systems. I was two trimesters into an eight trimester degree program.
I lived in Dallas, went to school in Irving (a 40 minute drive), and had no form of transportation of my own. I had been riding with my roommate until she got a job closer to school.
I worked after school at a job near home that paid the bills, nothing more. When I no longer had reliable transportation, this job came to an abrupt stop.
I was sitting in the commons area at school studying for finals when one of my classmates asked me what I was going to do over the break. I said, “I don’t know but I need to get to North Little Rock, Arkansas and I don’t know how I’m going to get there.”
At that precise moment, a woman I didn’t know, walked by and overheard my need. She said she would be glad to give me a ride.
She picked me up at my apt and dropped me off 5 hours later at my parent’s house in NLR. We had a wonderful visit and enjoyed the ride. It cost me nothing. Although I had no debt, I also had no money. She was glad to have the company.
I knew I needed to get there but I had no logical reason for the knowing. My family had no money for me. No branch of my family had money. My parents had moved to Arkansas for my dad’s job not long before I moved to Dallas to go to school.
So there I was, in NLR, Arkansas with no money and no way to get back to my stuff and school, but my conviction in my knowing never waned. It never occurred to me to worry about any of that. My intuition was simply to get to my parent’s house and I had somehow magically managed to do that.
I remember feeling a calm that didn’t seem to suit the situation. I should be fretting about how I was going to get some money to buy a car and I only had one week before school started again.
The next morning the phone rang. It was a great aunt no one had heard from in over 15 years. She was calling to see if anyone needed any money. She said she had just inherited some money and felt led to contact us and see if anyone needed any.
She wired $1500 that day. One “problem” down. Now I just needed to find a reliable car for $1,000 so I could keep some of the money to live on until I could find a job.
That’s when the phone rang again (I kid you not!). A friend of my dad called to say he had a car for sale that he felt good about offering to a friend. He said it had a lot of good miles left in it and he only wanted $1,000 for it.
Well, I knew enough by then not to question it. We went and checked out the car and bought it. It served me well. Never needed one repair through the rest of school and always took me where I needed to go in comfort.
Okay, I was becoming a believer for sure. These few days were so magical I couldn’t imagine it could get any better.
But wait…there’s more!
I headed back to Dallas with time to look for a job before school started…or so I thought.
When I got back to my apartment, my roommate had moved all of my stuff into a corner of my bedroom and moved in a new roommate who was sleeping in my bed.
My roommate said she had no reason to believe I was coming back. She was right. There was no logical way I could find the money, buy a car and come back with money to live on until I could find a job, but I did.
She had invited the girl from upstairs in the apartment above us to move in with her. She said she was tired of not having any furniture and Laura had some furniture.
Problem was Laura already had a roommate and she left her roommate, Susan, in a bind when she moved in with my roommate. Now Susan was going to have to move back home because she couldn’t afford the place by herself.
Well, I had no place to stay and she needed a roommate so we agreed to a temporary solution. I moved in with Susan.
Susan had a fully stocked apartment. She had everything! She loved to cook, as do I, and had a wonderfully stocked kitchen. She loved movies like I do, so she had a great T.V. set up with a bank of movies. She was even tall enough to share her clothes with me and told me to help myself to whatever I found.
I made out like a bandit! Susan and I became great friends and I shared an apartment with her for over a year before I moved closer to the school.
Now I had a car, a great fully stocked apartment and wonderful roommate, money to live on until I could get a job…how could it possibly get any better?
Moving and getting settled took most of my remaining time (I had a king size waterbed that was a bear to move) so I figured I would start looking for a job during the day after school.
The first day back to school, my favorite teacher asked me if I would be interested in providing tutoring for the computer science students. I was already tutoring my classmates so I thought I might as well get paid for it.
What a sweet deal! I got paid well to sit in the library at school and do my homework. I simply made myself available and posted my schedule. I had as many hours (within reason) as I wanted and it didn’t matter if I was tutoring or not, I got paid to be available.
This story has been an anchor in my experience of things happening magically without logical explanation. I have many other stories but this remains one of my favorites for how all encompassing it was.
Absolutely everything I needed was provided without me doing anything more than trusting and acting on the information that showed up.
I accepted the ride, I accepted the monetary gift, I bought the car, I accepted the new apartment, I accepted the job. Life flowed!
Amazing!
